June 27

After the less successful swimming trip yesterday, we decided to take advantage of the nice weather and head out to a beach town today. We went to Fulong, which is where we started our long hike a couple days before. They have a large white sand beach that is supposed to be the best in northern Taiwan. We did have to pay to get to it, but we were not disappointed at all. Our first stop on the beach was to see sand sculptures from an international sand sculpting competition. They were all really impressive and Rebecca and I wondered how they got them to stay there. They were carved several weeks earlier and we had had some pretty intense rain and wind since that time, but they all remained in pretty good condition.

We spent the rest of the day just playing in the water and on the beach. The water was pretty shallow and the waves were very mild. So mild that we felt comfortable even letting Agnes play in the water on her own. Overall, it was a nice relaxing day together. That evening we went back to the Jilong night market for dinner.

Eating breakfast in the morning - egg tortillas and hamburgers. The hamburgers were especially good here because they put on a lot of the secret sauce.

The train ride to the beach

This nice man also gave us some of his food that he had just bought. What he gave us included a bunch of packaged cookies and biscuits.

The bridge to the beach.

Some of our favorite sand sculptures.

Here is the beach. The water was pretty shallow and calm, but it was still fun to play in.

At the Jilong night market.

This curry was pretty good.

Some fried foods. Their tian-bu-la and fried chicken was really good.

Julia kept complaining that Agnes would roll over on her at night, but here we have proof that it was really the other way around.
